I'd just like to draw your attention to the Monica Edwards Appreciation Society (which has no connection with another, defunct similarly named society). Monica Edwards lived in Rye when she was a child and her father, the Reverend Harry Newton, was the Vicar who conducted the funeral service for the men lost in the Mary Stanford. Her "Romney Marsh" series of books was set in and around Rye Harbour (renamed "Westling" for the purpose) and many of her characters were based on people she knew as a child.

The books were written between 1947 and 1968 but still read well today. She wrote about things which still have relevance today - conservation, animal welfare, drug smuggling, foot and mouth disease and flooding among other things.

We are planning a Members' Day visit to Rye Harbour in October, 2007, when we hope to visit places we are familiar with from the books. Any M.E. fans who are interested in joining us should have a look at our site for further details.

Time goes by so fast! I have been in Rye many times. Actually we use to spend many weekends there especially during the summer.Lamb House use to be the address at that time! It is very nice to be able to see so many pictures of Rye again, 30 years later! If a Watson takes a notice of my Email could get in contact with me. (?)

I left Rye more years ago than I care to remember. As I'm now on my last legs I'm arranging my funeral: the undertakers here have agreed to my request for a cremation, the problem is, I want my ashes returned to Rye and scattered across the salts. My undertakers will only agree to this if I can give them an address of an undertakers in Rye willing to do this, so, could you please email the address of a good undertakers in Rye whom I can contact to arrange the details, thank you in anticipation.

What lovely pictures! They show Rye in a way I haven't seen it before, as I have always visited in the summer. I would love to see a picture of Simon the Pieman included. I spent a holiday in Rye with my parents many years ago and we stayed in the flat above Simon the Pieman. My parents had some very strange experiences there and they thought that the place might be haunted. Do you know anything about this or do you know anywhere where I might be able to find out more? This is something that has always intrigued me.
