I’ve always been a huge Civil War buff since I was a kid and am delighted to see such carefully-kept records about the men with whom my ancestor David Mason served. I haven’t been able to find much on him - I know that in addition to fighting in the entire Chattanooga campaign, he also participated in Sherman’s March to the Sea, so I’d love to hear more if anybody knows anything. Thank y’all for keeping up such a great site! |

Learned that this Regiment was mustered 9 Oct \'61 at Evansville. Nicholas \"Fox\" Wallace, a native of Veale Township, mustered in 10 Oct \'61 and was part of the Daviess County men who comprised Company G, under Capt. S. F. Horrall, who wrote about their regiment in 1892 along with W. M. Cockrum. Here\'s what he recalled (and this is available online): \"Moving to the battle of Murfreesboro, comrades J. C. Allison, Nicholas Wallace—\'Fox\' he was called, because on entering Camp Vanderburg he had worn a cap made of a fox skin with the long tail for a plume. They and Frank Walker were given permission by an officer to fall out of ranks and pick their way, as neither was well fitted for duty; upon the condition that they were to be on hand at the battle, which promptly they were.\" Next up was the Battle of Stones River, where Nicholas was one of the many Union Army casualties. He died of injuries sustained in battle on Jan 2, 1863. His daughter, Araminta Wallace, married my second cousin, Edward Charles Hussey, 1880, in Daviess County. |
