Let's not forget the children who died - tribute to Aaron Bacon

This was taken from actual court records that upheld the conviction of Fisher, one of the staff members resonsible for the death of Aaron. Apparently this boy was starved and abused. He was forced to sleep without a sleeping bag in 25 degree weather. He had to eat pine needles, live lizards and cactus because he was too weak to carry his back pack. Because he could not make a fire he was not allowed to eat for many days. This torture continued until he died. Staff told him he was faking it when he complained of stomach pain. The last words he heard were not those of loved ones by his deathbed - they were words of ridicule by staff members who continued to demean him until he died in a truck.

Court Transcripts read:
"Bacon was unable to walk and looked pale and sickly, and he told one of these staff members that he was "really sick." A Northstar employee, who had been told that Bacon was feigning illness, told Bacon that he just needed to get in the truck. Bacon got into the truck and the Northstar employee fastened Bacon's seat belt.

For the next few minutes, the staff made fun of Bacon and imitated his collapse. When Bacon slouched over in the truck, they unbelted him, checked for a pulse, began CPR, and radioed Northstar for help. A physician's assistant, who had examined Bacon before he began the Northstar program, arrived and began advanced life support procedures on Bacon. The physician's assistant later testified that Bacon was so gaunt he did not recognize Bacon as the boy he had examined several weeks earlier. A helicopter arrived, and Bacon was flown to Page, Arizona, where he was pronounced dead.

The autopsy revealed that Bacon died of acute peritonitis resulting from a perforated ulcer. Expert testimony established that the ulcer had most likely developed around March 15, and that malnutrition and hypothermia would have aggravated his condition. During his time at Northstar, Bacon's weight dropped from 131 pounds to 108 pounds, a 17% loss of body mass."

This abuse is commonplace in these programs. How long will society turn a blind eye to this? How long will those who were elected and hired to protect the interests of children do nothing? Now they want to kill two boys who unfortunately killed someone while trying to escape. Is this the answer?

Re: Let's not forget the children who died - tribute to Aaron Bacon

I've read several stories about Aaron. his story really hit me hard. he sounds like a person I would have really liked to know. if you're interested, read some of his poems at teen advocates usa. he wrote some brilliant stuff. also worth a read is the stuff his mom wrote about him, she seems like a really caring mom who had no idea what she was sending her son into. his death was tragic, and these people who ran the program that killed him are still running wilderness programs...something has to be done.

Re: Let's not forget the children who died - tribute to Aaron Bacon

I did not know about this and am very sorry to hear it. Before I went to PCS I was in a program called Aspen Achievement Academy. It was a wilderness program and i was in it for 2 months. I remember having to take billy baths which were where you warmed up water in a coffee can and then bathed yourself. I remember times I could not make a fire and I ate cold Ramen noodles. I still hate those **** things to this day. I remember the winter solstice it got to -20 but believe it or not we had good equipment so I wasn't cold.

I saw people run from this program but never saw anybody die. I am sorry to hear this happened and I can only guess this was some other program because I never hear of Northstar before.
