Re: Minimum income

For a single individual, who is not the dependent of any one else and who does not have self employment income, you GENERALLY don't have to file until your gross income exceeds $8,450 (Personal exemption of $3,300, plus the standard deduction of $5,150).

There are lots of variables as to who must file a return, such as if you did have self employment income, if you are the dependent of someone, if you are married, etc. Also, even if you are not required to file, if you have a refund due, you must file to get the refund.

If you go to www.irs.gov, select Forms and Publications, and download Publication 17, it lays out who must file on page 5 of the Publication.
