Deductible Mileage

Many people ask us about when the miles they drive qualify as tax deductible. Here's the answer to that question.

As a rule of thumb, the mileage driven between your home and a regular place of business is not deductible mileage. Driving between job sites, between your home and a temporary job site, and between your home and conferences and job interviews does count as deductible business related mileage.

If you moonlight and get paid as an independent contractor, you can deduct those miles directly against your self-employment income. If you're paid through your employer, and taxes are being withheld, you must deduct your allowable auto expenses as an unreimbursed employee business expense, which flows through to the Schedule A as a miscellaneous itemized deduction.
