Re: Why do I have to pay if I claimed 0 on my W-4?

Whether you owe or get a refund depends on a lot of different variables. By claiming 0 allowances, you had more taxes withheld than if you had claimed 1 allowance. But if you worked for more than one employer, or had income with no withholding such as moonlighting or investment income, than it's not unusual that you ended up owing taxes.

You need to keep in mind that your tax liability is the important number. By April 15th, that's what you end up paying in taxes, no matter whether you owe money with your tax return or get a refund.

Thank You for that Information. However this was/is my only job. No income investments ets..That is why I am confused. The prior year I had more taxes taken out and I claimed a 1 for an allowance.

It's possible your employer failed to withhold taxes from your pay at some point in time, or perhaps you got paid a bonus or commission check with very little taxes withheld.

If you claim single - 0, you generally get a refund if you only work for one employer.

The key issue isn't the size of your refund, however. Are you taking the steps necessary to cut your tax liability, such as contributing to your employer's 401k plan or IRA, or owning where you live?

Yes Thank You, I am contributing as much as I can to my 401k, and I work for only one employer. I didn't receive any bonuses. I guess there is nothing I can do now, if my employer didn't withhold enough, although I thought it was a law, they had to withhold a certain percent. Thanks again!!
