Hunker down, work through lunch and hope she notices what a hard worker you are.
Stop in, say hi and invite him to lunch.
Introduce yourself and hand her an executive briefing on what she needs to know about your projects and the organization and offer to review it with her.
Offer to be his right-hand person and let him know you're up on the latest organizational rumors.
You have a great idea and you want to present it to your boss. You:
Prepare a presentation and leave it on his desk so he can take it home and read it tonight.
Take her out to lunch and pitch your new idea, telling her all the reasons why she's going to love it.
Test out your idea with key people whose support is critical, then get your boss' input before finalizing plan.
Explain to your boss how your idea will personally benefit him and make the other departments look like they haven't done their homework
Your boss has asked you to take on another project and you are already in overload. You:
Write him an e-mail detailing all the reasons why you can't do it and asking him to choose someone else.
Take her to lunch to persuade her that Charlie in accounting is underutilized and would be a better choice.
Tell him you will do it, then put it on the back burner, hoping he'll get frustrated and chose someone else.
Explain impact of new project on other priorites and explore alternatives to meet goals such as an outside consultant, intern, etc.
You've been given a tight deadline to come up with some new marketing ideas for the VP of Marketing's pet product. You:
Work like crazy, beat the deadline and reveal the plan for the first time to VP at a big meeting.
Get input from the VP and key influencers along the way before unveiling final plan to VP
Do a happy dance and celebrate and let everyone in the office know you're on this special project.
Hire an outside consultant and present the consultant's ideas.
You want a job that is going to come open soon in another department. You:
Network with department head and other members of the department, learn the issues facing them, and give them some ideas you think would benefit the department.
Take the head of the department out to lunch and tell her why you wiould be perfect for the job.
Inform HR and send in your resume.
Get friendly with the department head's boss and ask him for the job.
You have a stickler for a boss. Misspellings and inconsistencies in format drive him crazy. You're not good at self-editing and you've a big presentation. You:
Use spell check.
Stay up half the night reading and rereading the presentation looking for errors.
Ask someone who is good at self-editing to look it over for you.
Settle for having good content and don't worry about the details.
You were up for a promotion and someone else got it. Now you'll be reporting to them. You:
Start looking for another job. It's clear your career is over at this place.
Keep information close to your vest. The less your new boss knows, the better you'll look and they'll realize they made an error.
File a complaint with HR about unfair practices.
Sit down with your new boss, share your disappointment and ask him to mentor you to be his successor.
