Stage actress Anne Meacham dead at 80
CANAAN, N.Y., Jan. 17 (UPI) --
Stage actress Anne Meacham, who starred in the original production of Tennessee Williams's "Suddenly Last Summer," has died in New York at age 80. She was a familiar face on TV in the 1950's and 1960's and in 1972 joined the cast of the soap opera, "Another World." in 1972 as Louise Goddard. Among her film credits was the 1964 production of "Lillith." Meacham is survived by a sister. Meacham died Thursday at her home in Canaan, N.Y., the New York Times reported Tuesday. Meacham starred in Eva Le Gallienne's 1964 Broadway staging of "The Seagull" and won an Obie Award for her performance as Catharine Holly in "Suddenly, Last Summer." She won a second Obie award for a revival of "Hedda Gabler" in 1961. The Chicago native was close friend of Williams' and appeared in his 1969 play "In the Bar of a Tokyo Hotel" and a production of his 1966 play "The Gnadiges Fraulein." Meacham's last Broadway appearance was in Tom Stoppard's "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" in 1968.
