I remember Mr Hilary, he was diabetic, he used to suck sweets all the time! and I got my legs slapped with a ruler, was I the only girl!?? I had Mrs King (dont know which year) and the classroom was a prefab in the rear playground, Its still there! I remember playing in the air-raid shelters in the playground but they have since gone. My daughter now goes dancing there after school!! Really strange going back, I'd love to have a proper look round.

Does anyone remember Mr Bachelor reciting the story of Rudyard Kiplings "Rikki Tikki Tavi" in the school hall year after year??

Anyone remember Mrs Lloyd? She was my teacher for 2 years followed by Miss Giles. Both were well respected & I still can remember them despite leaving in 1967 to go to Vyners. Mr Thomas also taught sports & he got me going at cricket - a lot to answer for!

Yes I remember all of those teachers Miss Evans was my favorite. Mr Batchelor was the Head white I was there. I have an old school photo with him and Miss Evans on it. I was there sometime between 1956 and 1961 then I went on to Bourne.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Small World

Nigel,

Your name seems familiar to me but I can't picture you. I left Lady Bankes in 1967 and went to Bourne. I remember Mrs Lloyd and also Mrs Oswald. I have a painting here done by her husband. My mother bought it from an exhibition at RM Library some years ago. I remember Mr. Batchelor reading Rikki Tikki every year. I also remember Mr. Hilary and the way he smacked the legs. He was diabetic as some years after I left school I used to visit a Cafe in Rayners Lane for lunch. Mr. Hilary used to go in there and once had a diabetic fit and an ambulance was called. Not goo PR for the Cafe owner. I'll have to look for some of my old school photos and see who I can remember.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Small World

I remember Miss Giles, also Mrs Fordie(especially the slaps!). Mr Thomas used to have a red? sports car and when my family moved to Southall with just my last term to go he was good enough to give me lifts to school every day as he came from that direction. I remember the air raid shelters - great for running up & over the humps. Also the games we had crazes for at breaks - remember taking Corgi/Dinky cars and all lining up along one edge of the playground to see whose could roll the furthest? And flicksies - nearest to flick a tea card against the wall (days before bubble gum was invented I think!). Marbles was a perennial favourite & as my dad worked in engineering I always had a good supply of steel ball bearings - they'd probably be confiscated now as potentially dangerous missiles. Happy days...

I was at Lady Bankes from 60/64. I remember Mrs Polden. She always had her hair in a bun and wore sensible shoes. Miss Evans seems to ring a bell as well. Hilary Batchelor was in my class. I also spent some time in the air raid shelters in the back playground.

Re: Re: Re: Small World

Barry, we were at Lady Bankes at exactly the same time from your dates. I remember going to Victoria Hall. Miss/Mrs Polden was primary school head. Mr Bachelor took over as Junior School head from Miss Christian, who was the first head - my father was in the first year intake when it opened, must have been around 1932. I remember all the teachers mentioned: Mr Dix, Miss Wells, - Mrs Lloyd was my teacher in 3rd year, then John Rance for the last 2 years.

As I recall the houses were Scott (blue), Shakelton (red), Grenfell (yellow - my house) and who was green?

Re: Re: Small World

Yes, Mr Bachelor was head when I was there, 1964-69. Recently visited Corfe Castle, knew there was some affinity there with my past, of course it was Lady Banks who defended the castle! Remember the annual school trip to Corfe - the school still visits there every year!! The guide says Lady Banks is buried in Ruislip, I presume its at St. Martins Church in Ruislip - it this true, too long ago now to remember details and have moved away!

Re: Re: Re: Small World

Tony, are you in the black and white photo at the start of The Lady Bankes page ?

I think I am on the top row, last one on the left, if my eyes are working properly! I don't have this photo but I do have three other year's, although I'm not sure which is which!
