I assume the first post was just one friend razzing another. But as an old geezer I have to mention the only way to be sure safety equipment is available when needed is to always have it, always use it. Even ordinary people can have freak accidents.

So you can windsurf in 40 knots in front of barges without a life vest, but paddling in front of the sandbar in a glass-off without a lifevest is a fine?
