I'm wanting to get into rec. light wind formula windsurfing. I've found a 02 starboard 156 for
$500. Would a board this old make my transition
from freeride to formula more difficult? I'm aware
that formula sailing is more tecnical, but I am
very determined. Would a newer model board be
more suitable.?

I think you should not buy an older model than the '06 , because from that year on all the Formula boards are still competitive to the newest ones and the wider tails will help you to learn faster and later when you became better be also more competitive in early planning,up and downwinds.
