Capt. William B. Royall, US 5th Cavalry

I am researching J.E.B. Stuart's raid around the Army of the Potomac in 1862 for my battlefield history group. Somewhere in my early reading I came across an account of Capt. William B. Royall, US 5th Cav., being carried back to camp after he is wounded in his combat with Capt. William Latane of the 9th Va Cav. (My family buried Capt. Latane and is depicted in the famous painting.) There is a fair amount of gory detail about Royall's saber wounds. To my subsequent shame and frustration I neglected to make note of the source. Does this ring any bells for anyone? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Capt. William B. Royall, US 5th Cavalry

I did a search for this incident, which you probably did too, and was able to find nothing indicating the wound recieved by Royall. I don't recall reading anything about the fact other than that he was wounded. The wound Royall took from Latane was not mortal and he was able to recover from it.

Sorry I can't be of additional help here.

The description of Capt. Royall's wounds you are seeking is contained in "Across the Continent with the Fifth Cavalry," p. 295.

I am a newspaper reporter in Columbia, Mo., who compiles a daily Civil War history report for our newspaper.

Check it out at

Royall was from Columbia, and was unusual because he was a Regular Army officer who was not a West Point graduate. Things would get hot for the Fifth Cavalry 150 years ago this weekend.

Google has the book online as a free e-book. Here's the link:
