McIver Park

FINALLY! The season is upon us. I have been to the site of our camp at this event and have walked through it with the event coordinator.

We will be in the same basic area as last year. You will enter Parking Lot A, go down the asphalt path past civilians, US cav, US infantry, hospital, open parade, CS hospital, artillery, then cavalry (our camp first). Horses will be kept in the grove of trees alongside the camp. We will have the 14th Virginia and the 43rd Virginia as well as the 1st Maryland with us in the cavalry area and all CSA horses will be "centralized". Battalion HQ will be next with their horses, then the infantry. Horse manure must be removed from the site by the park so we will now be required to make a central pile for pickup.

Civilians of the refugee camp will be across the asphalt pathway in and around the trees in a manner that best sets off their impression. Water is also located in this area.

Our own camp will be backwards from what it was last year. It will be a garrison camp with winterquarters equipment. PLEASE do not bring your fold up chairs! Bring a block of wood or an old period chair, a barrel, a box, something they actually HAD in a garrison camp. We want to look correct for the public.

Along the asphalt path and on the river side of it will be the line of officer's tents going in the same direction as the path. There will be a little distance and then the company fly will be set up. Beyond that will be the start of individual streets with a sergeants tent at the top of each. One line mounted men, one line dismounted men. We will also be setting up a couple tents for new men who have not gotten their supplies yet and we will have a visiting area for other cav members who visit us and need a place to put their horses.

I and Sgt. Lewis will be setting up on Thursday and I suggest those of you who live near the event site come in Thursday afternoon or evening and set up your own tents. Do not bring weapons or valuables until you plan to stay.

You can find directions to the event at http://nwcwc.org/mciver.htm

See you at the event.
