J&J Charlesworth Ltd. Colliery Pay Checks

Here one that I’m sure one or more of the specialist Yorkshire check collectors will know the answer to.

Can anyone confirm how many different named job titles there are embossed on the different varieties of J&J Charlesworth paychecks from Newmarket Colliery? I’ve seen the following;

- Coal Getting
- Haulage
- Surface
- Bye Work

Someone once told me there are ones with Deputy embossed on them also. Is this correct or just an urban myth?

Also has anyone else noticed that the different shaped holes cut out the centre of these double side embossed checks are not consistent (i.e. you can find the say “Coal Getting with both the oval hole and a square etc.). The others in the set may show signs of inconsistencies also but I’ve not notices. I don’t know if this was intentional or just a production error with the wrong brass blanks being stamped between the wrong set of dies.

Also which other J&J Charlesworth colliery paychecks have job titles embossed on them. I can't remember if the Beeston and Fanny Pits etc. ones do or not. I know the one example I've seen from their Robin Hood Coke Works hasn't got any job desciption marked on it.

Any more info about these or similar J&J Charlesworth check would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mark
