Polished miners lamps

There are a number of polished lamps that are coming
up for sale on the auction site at the moment.
The person that is selling these is an amateur in the
collecting of miners lamps, as the polishing of lamps
removes the writing of the maker, buy these these
lamps at your peril ...

Re: Polished miners lamps

IF ANY ONE HAS EVER BEEN IN A PROPER LAMP ROOM THEY WOULD KNOW THESE THINGS WERE POLISHED TO WITHIN AN INCH OF THEIR LIVES!, THATS HALF THE PROBLEM WITH SOME OLD PROTECTORS. HOW DO YOU FEEL LAMPS SHOULD BE PRESERVED? MY SELF I THINK A POLISHED LAMP IS FAR NICER, AND OFTEN SHOWS THE BEAUTY OF THE THING, I MESELF WOULD LOVE TO HAVE ONE OF THOSE OLD DOUBLE ENDED POLSISHERS FROM A LAMP ROOM.DIRTY BRASS IS WHAT IT IS.

Re: Polished miners lamps

These lamps were never polished , you can see that in the old
photos, the person who would polish these lamps to-day is
a person who is out to boost his sales to the public by
presenting a lamp that is polished , the same person will
also be a property developer and dodgy pop sales man i.e. mineral water.
Also he will be in the badge business, producing anniversary badges on
the memory of the striking miners I.e REPRODUCTION

Re: Polished miners lamps

As an ex lampman I can say that all oil lamps that had done a shift underground were dismantled and cleaned every day. This had to be done to make sure that the gauzes in the chimmney and the reflectors were clean, otherwise they would not work efficiently. The wicks and the worms were checked and then filled with fuel every day.

Once a week the were stripped and POLISHED with BRASSO.They sparkled like diamonds when put on their racks.

Re: Polished miners lamps

Mulliner, lets put you right. Havee you ever had anything to do with mining? i'd say not. Its quite right whats been said they were polished to a very high shine, removing any deposit of coal dust & dirt. Get your facts right dumpling!!!!!
