Davy Safety Lamp

hello,

ive had this lamp for a while but just started to look into it and so far i figured out its a brass safety lamp (Davy Lamp) from the early 1800's but i cant figure out what the markings are on the top, whats your opinion??? looks like somebody tapped the number 700 on top???? and also stamped the numer 111. then theres a diamond shape with the letters B and C . i know it was custom for miners to purchase their own equipment so maybe the guy numbered his or its the mine number perhaps???? also i havent been able to find a pic with the type of hand forged hook like on the one i have, all the others have a simple ring or bent piece of wire looking thing. i stuck a magnet to the gauze and it stuck if that means anything....

thanks in advance, Brad

Re: Davy Safety Lamp

I will see if I can edit your addresses to show the pics
Charles

It could be a very early Joseph Cook Birmingham. Should fetch a decent price if you wanted to sell it.
Not seen this style of lower gauze cage or vessel shape finish before with JCB. Also it has not got the raised rim and centre nipple on the bottom of the vessel, which is characteristic of JCB, and the solid brass half catch holding the top down is not JCB style. The saddle top looks squashed together to fit the top of the lamp and could well be a replacement of an original top. Therefore the lamp may well not be a JCB, other than the saddle top.
Anyone else got any thoughts?

Re: Davy Safety Lamp

more pics of the saddle top in detail......

Re: howats shaft lamp

i just got this bit of info via email and it seems to go along with what charles said earlier ........

''Your lamp was made by Joseph Cooke of Birmingham. Some of his lamps have the full name on the top but most have the triangle with JCB. The hook looks like a later colliery replacement, it is certainly not the original. The numbers on the top are the colliery numbers and with two sets it might have moved from one colliery to another. The lamp was probably made between about 1880 to 1900 but this type of Cooke lamp continued to be made long after they were no longer approved for use in mines.''

Re: howats shaft lamp

Re: howats shaft lamp

haha nice 1 mate , i dinet nar it seems i canet even give a compliment on wor chucks SUPERB howats shaft lamp and i get some stick haha unlike a lot of collectors owt there i do not tak afence to comments aimed at me like yours haha , again ya missing the point er the point being wor chuck as aquiered a wounderfull example of a shaft lamp and i for 1 think congratulations r in order to charles not only for adding a wounderfull lamp to his collection but for taking the time to put the pictures on the website so we can all see and apreciate wot a magnificent lamp it is , AND TO ALAN FOR TAKING THE TIME TO PUT THE IMFO HE AS ON THE WEB SITE REGARDING THE LAMP , i no collectors who wouldent give other collectors the time of day and just imagen if every body behaved in this manor , there would be no point in collecting , true honest collectors r thouse who r prepared to take the time to share imfo and let others view there lamps , we all HAVE A PART TO PLAY IN OWER HOBBIE , WEATHER YOU HAVE A BIG WORLD CLASS LIKE WOR CHUCK OR LIKE ME A SMALL COLLECTION THERES ALL WAYS SOME TO LEARN REGARDLESS OF WHO YOU R OR WOT U HAV , SO INSTEAD OF HAVIN A DIG AT ME WHY DINET YA PUT YOR VIEWS AND COMMENTS ON THE WEB SITE REGARDING THE HOWATS SHAFT LAMP AND PLEASE REMEMBER NO MATTER WHAT LAMPS ANY BODY HAS IN THERE COLLECTIONS WE R ONLY THE KEEPERS OF THE LAMPS AND NEVER THE TRUE OWNERS

Re: howats shaft lamp

Good Un anthony, well said. Lets hope other collectors will now share pics and info on their items of interest. Looks like we are finally getting somewhere on getting lots of Mmembers to post on the forums and share info and answer queries on items use and the history.
By the way did anyone think about posting pit bottom slang words and their meanings, before they disapear from memories.
