Extensions and audits

Is there any data to suggest that filing for an extension would decrease or increase your chances of an audit?

I'm not convinced that there is any correlation between returns that go on extension and audit selection.

I have some clients that always go on extension because they heard that decreasing their chance of being audited, and I have others who never go on extension because they heard the contrary.
