Board monitoring expenses: ? deductible

Board-mandated monitoring programs for physicians in recovery have many expenses; most would likely qualify as medical deductions if paid out-of-pocket.

Some expenses are fees paid to contract monitors, say for toxicology specimen collection and other monitoring tasks. Other expenses include psychotherapy fees, board visit travel, legal fees, one-time medical evaluation fees.

Are any such monitoring expenses deductible as simply professional expenses, esp. if one's income precludes capturing any medical deduction?

Re: Board monitoring expenses: ? deductible

Basically, you can't work unless you keep up with the perscribed program. For that reason, I would say that the costs associated with this program should be deductible to you as an unreimbursed employee business expense.

Have you been told that you can't deduct these costs as a professional expense?
