Tuition 1098 T

I paid tuition towards a masters degree and received a 1098 T form. I understand that I cannot deduct this cost become of income limitations. I have bother 1099 and W2 income. Can I deduct this expense on Schedule C against 1099 income? Thanks

Re: Tuition 1098 T

You can deduct tuition as a professional expense if the courses you took improve your skills in your current trade or business.

Any time you take classes as part of a program to qualify you for a new trade or business (such as medical school or dental school), those costs are not deductible.

So it depends on what you do for work, and what you were studying. An MD taking classes towards an MPH, for example, should be able to claim the costs of those classes as a professional expense either directly against 1099-Misc income on the Schedule C or as an unreimbursed employee business expense on a Form 2106.

Re: Re: Tuition 1098 T

As a followup question...if the university has issued me a 1098T for my MPH, do I have to claim that as tuition or can I still claim it as continuing education?
