sales tax deduction

I am thinking of using my year end credit card statement as proof of sales tax and using that instead of the IRS tables. How do I calculate this?

$100 charged to a credit card with 7% sales tax does not mean I paid $7 in sales tax and bought $93 in goods ($93 + 7% tax = $99.51 charged)

Re: sales tax deduction

The federal government keeps on extending this tax break for you. I wonder if they will ever make it permanent.

For 2008, taxpayers can choose between claiming an itemized deduction for either their state income taxes paid in during the year or their sales taxes paid in during the year.

The amount of the charge reflected on your credit card reflects the cost of the merchandise AND the sales tax charged. To figure out the sales taxes charged, you need to divide the total amount of the charge by 1.07. That will get you the purchase price of what you bought. Multiply that by .07, and you get the tax you paid.
