re:university check

Hi Andrew,
I worked as an employee for a hospital who sent me the W-2 , i at the same time in 2007 , I was doing voluntary research at another nearby university and attended a medical conference and presented research for them .

Later the university asked me to show receipts of my travel, stay expenses and gave a 1360 dollar check to re-imburse and it came on a university check , which I am sure had my social security number info with them in their system .

My question is When I am filing my tax return , Should I be informing this income as "other income' or 1099 and if so can I show my hotel , travel receipts to prevent this money from being taxed in addition to my W-2 income

thank you for your valuable time
Bud

Re: re:university check

Piece of cake.

The safest course of action is to prepare a Schedule C, report $1,360 as income, and then claim $1,360 in travel expenses.

If the hospital submitted a 1099-Misc with the IRS, they will be able to match that amount with the income line of your Schedule C. And by claiming those expenses, you don't get taxed on income you didn't receive.

See, I told you it was a piece of cake.
