Re: Re: Doing my Own Return? (Joint Filing)

Thank you Mr. Schwartz,
I will try to prepare my own return this year using
one of the computer software methods you mentioned and compare the results to my F.I.L.'s completed return.

Here's a thought. Maybe this year you can prepare your own return on TurboTax or TaxCut, and then have your father-in-law review it for you.

Another idea is to prepare your own return, and compare it to the return he prepares. If it comes out close, then perhaps you can feel comfortable takeing care of your own taxes going forward.

I see a lot of people who come to my office after completing their returns the prior year. Some people seem to get it right, while others aren't very close.

Also try TaxAct. Their free online edition offers free e-file for everyone: http://www.taxactonline.com. This is a completely legit company; I've been using them for years (but am thinking of switching to Andrew & Co. as my situation gets more complicated).
