If you work one shift as a contractor, that income is considered self-employment income.

Even so, I don't think the IRS would want you to claim all of your professional expenses for the year against that income and show a huge loss.

If you incurred expenses in connection with getting set up to work as a contractor, and you incurred expenses for the one day you worked, then you should deduct those against the income received that day, even if the expenses exceed the income by a little bit.
