Two different states

I was just wondering on how I would file. The first 6 months of 2002 I worked in NY and the last 6 months in Ohio. I do plan to itemize. How do my deductions affect my state returns, and do they at all? DO I need to separate my itemized deductions based on job. Thank you

Re: Two different states

When you lived in more than one state during the same tax year (and changed your residency status to the new state), you generally must file a "part-year" tax return in each of the states where you lived. Here, things get tricky, since every state has different tax rules.

In your case, New York allows you to claim your itemized deductions. However, you have you prorate your itemized deductions based on the income you earned within New York during the year as compared with the income you earned for the whole year. So, if you earned $30,000 in New York, and $100,000 for the year, you'll essentially claim 30% of your allowable itemized deductions when calculating your New York taxes.

If you lived within New York City, you're supposed to only deduct those itemized deductions that you paid while living in the City on the part-year city tax return.

And for Ohio, I believe you're taxed on your Adjusted Gross Income, which is your income before deductions. So your itemized deductions won't even come into play.

If you'll be preparing your own tax returns, I recommend that you read the tax forms and instructions very carefully.

Re: Two different states

Andrew's answer regarding your Ohio return is correct. Ohio starts with your Federal Adjusted Gross Income. Ohio doesn't allow itemized deductions.

On your Ohio return, you would compute your Ohio tax based on your Federal AGI, then you would prorate your Ohio tax based on the % of your income earned in Ohio.

Hope this helps,

Gary
