How can I become a CPA at this point?

This is a great board. I've recommended it to all my physician friends. My situation is different. At this point I'm thinking of actually getting a CPA. Before you get anxious that I might become a future "competitor," let me assure you that my interest lies entirely in serving expat American physicians living in Asia since I'd like to permanently relocate to Hong Kong (or maybe you guys can hire me to work there after I get my CPA?). So my question is, can I still become a CPA at this "late" point in life? (I'm 35 and never took a business class in school.) If so, how? Thanks very much for your advice. -Bret from Massachusetts

A great place to find information on becoming a CPA is the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (www.aicpa.org).

Every state has their own rules regarding the licensing of CPAs. In Massachusetts, the site is www.mscpaonline.org. You probably want to check out that site as well.

Another route is to become an Enrolled Agent with the IRS. To get the EA designation, you need to pass a difficult test with the IRS, showing that you're knowledgable about taxes. It's a pretty comprehensive exam, but if you're looking to pursue a career in income taxes, it's a very good designation to have.

Good luck.

Thanks, Andrew! I hope your silence on the age thing is a positive indication that I'm not too old to start a new career in taxes. :) Thanks again.
