Re: Re: file as jt married or head of household

Based on your reply, I CAN qualify as is to file married filing jointly despite my wife having no income?

If so, based on my previously stated $10K in deductions from my $48K income, would that allow me to drop my tax braket to 15%?

Who can file as head of household what benefit is there to file as such?

Re: Re: Re: file as jt married or head of household

Your filing status depends on your marital status, and has nothing to do with your spouse's income. If you're married on December 31st, you file either Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separately. When your spouse has no income, you benefit taxwise by filing jointly.

In your situation, if you file jointly, you'll be in the 15% bracket.

The Head of Household status applies to unmarried taxpayers who maintain a household for another person. The tax brackets applicable for someone filing as Head of Household are advantageous versus someone filing under Single.
