6.0.8L disks and fings

In my ongoing obsession with Powerbook 100's, I've just got another fella with a working disk and everything tickedy boo. What I'd like to do is load up System 6 version for the 100, 6.0.8L. I've got the two .hqx files and made 1.44MB floppies on my PB1400. However, the 100 is not playing ball and ejects the disks. I've only got system 7 on 400/800 K disks but I don't to load system 7 anyway. What am I not doing correctly? I got 6.0.8L from here:

Re: 6.0.8L disks and fings

I think I posted a similar enquiry when I first began my 100 odyssey but I cam unstuck as to how to bless the system folder.
Help please... nice straightforward how to change it on the system floppy I have would be nice

Re: 6.0.8L disks and fings

I tried downloading them and expanding them on OS X just a second ago. Expander says it has damaged content on it. So there both damaged. :( . Luckily I have tons of 6.0.8 disks for Mini vMac, and from my old SE. You can get them here: http://www.open.ou.nl//psl/pb100/

(I would give you the straight download link but I thought the FAQ was interesting.

If you read the whole thing, just remember that the 6.0.8L software is on "What version of OS should I use on my PB 100?"

Hope it works!

good luck!!!!

Re: 6.0.8L disks and fings

I know the FAQ's well... premier source for 100 stuff.
I don't think the files are corrupted just not bootable due to non-blessed status of the installer system folder.
Now, MiniVmac... a few questions arising from previous journeys.

Is there a downloadable version for OS 9.1?
Can you run System 6.0.8 successfully on it?
Do you still need the Mac 128K ROM to get it functional?

Go on Nick, tell me I can run System 6 on my PB1400 and I'd be a happy chappie.

Re: 6.0.8L disks and fings

No I coulden't find a downloadable file for OS 9, I posted a message for a wanted OS9 boot disk. But was told it's illegal copies. So I searched for months until I came across COI (Classic On Intel) which is a emulator for OS X that supports OS 9.0.4. Although, you can't use 9.1 on Mini vMac, since it emulates a Mac Plus. It can only go up to 7.5.5. I have about every bootdisk for it. yes, they all work, from system 1.0, through 7.5.5. I figured you knew the FAQ, but it was interesting to refresh your mind, (at least it did mine!) I had a PB 100 once, and loved it. It crashed big time though, and I had to recycle it...:( It runs on Mac OS X only, (I'm not shure about a Windos version, although I'm converting one.

Yes you can run 6 on PB 100!!!!!:)

Re: 6.0.8L disks and fings

Although I'd like to know why you'd want to put system 6 on a newer Mac. It dosen't have as many features as 7.5, or OS 8, and it's kinda hard to install. Yes, you could put system 6 on a 1400, but it would kind of be a drag that you couldn't surf the web fast, or do much on it. To keep your old software intersts, got here http://minivmac.sourceforge.net/ for more info on Mini vMac. I think it comes in very handy, especially with older disks, and I can keep my old machines up to date. I made a page just for Mini vMac, all the downloadable boot disks, and rom, and the program. Unfortunatly its not on the web yet. Do you have OS X, or a newer Mac?

Re: 6.0.8L disks and fings

Nick
What I meant was 'Is there a version of MinivMac that will run on a machine with OS 9.1 as the operating system'? I can only locate MinivMac for OSX.

Indeed, I have a G5 and MiniMac running Leopard but fell in love with simplicity, rapidity and straightforwardness of System 6 first time round. I use it on Classic at school and my students think I'm mad but there you go.

Re: 6.0.8L disks and fings

Actually, there is a Classic version of it, http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=minivmac&filename=minivmac-2.8.2.bin.mpwmppcs.zip&use_mirror=internap

I know it works, cause I tried it.

I wasn't trying to make fun of System 6, but I wondered why you would update a 1400 PB to older software, and that's why I suggested Mini vMac.

Re: 6.0.8L disks and fings

Nick, you're not reading andybloom's posts very carefully. He's manifestly not proposing to run system 6 on the 1400 (which it cannot, and andybloom well knows it). He's using the 1400 to download and create system 6 floppies for another 'book, the PB100. In the process, he's having problems with the floppies so produced. That's what he's asking help for.

Or perhaps it is I who has not properly followed the thread's progression?

Re: 6.0.8L disks and fings

To be fair, I started off with one query and moved to another.
Yes, I did want the secret of making blessed startup disks for my 100 so it can boot into System 6.
In addition, I liked the idea of System 6 emulation that Nick had mentioned.

Re: 6.0.8L disks and fings

And so did you ever solve the blessing problem? When I've encountered similar problems before, the solution has been to open the system folder, drag the finder and system files out of it, and then drag them back in. But I assume you already knew this, and encountered some other difficulty along the way. One requirement might be to perform this ritual on a mac that's not running too modern an OS. So, if you have another mac running system 7 or 8, that might be the right machine for this job.
