I want to make Macintosh Performa 6205CD boot faster!!!

Hi!! I have this Macintosh Performa 6205CD in my room, I fixed it up, cleaned the junk off it, and updated it to 8.1. Well, the only thing I want it to do is boot faster than it is! It takes at least 5 min to boot up! I've tried to delete extensions I didn't need, but it still takes forever! Someone please help me! Is there a shortcut or something? Because all the other sites on Google have nothing!

Please reply!!

Re: I want to make Macintosh Performa 6205CD boot faster!!!

Tips for fastest possible bootup:

1) You've already disabled unneeded extensions.
2) Turn off unneeded services (like filesharing, etc.).
3) Max out the RAM.
4) Very important: DISABLE virtual memory.

If you don't have a lot of ram installed, you may wish to downgrade the OS. OS8.1 needs much more memory than, say, 7.5.5.

Re: I want to make Macintosh Performa 6205CD boot faster!!!

Yeah, those are really good suggestions, but what really stinks is that I did a REALLY stupid thing... I accidently replaced half of my control panels/extensions with OS 9, instead of 8.5... Some work, and some don't, (I would LOVE Energy Saver to work) but Memory is one of them, (Virtual Memory is turned off.) But great suggestions!

(Shoot! I accidently told you I updated it to 8.1, when I really I updated it to 8.5)

Since 7.5.5 is free, you can easily do a clean reinstall and avoid all these problems, and end up with a faster system at the end.

Thanks for all your help! I do think that your suggestions were helpful, in fact, I did install 7.5.5 on it, It boots faster, but I have been having tons of problems on it, so I switched back to 8.5. It takes just as long again. I do think what you said was right! :)

What sorts of problems made you ditch 7.5.5? And also, how much ram do you have installed?

Re: I want to make Macintosh Performa 6205CD boot faster!!!

Well all my icons (even the Trash) were messed up, and were in different colors. I also got the blinking question mark on the disk, at startup sometimes, but when I did it again, it was fine. What was the most scary was when I turned it on, and got the crash PowerPC card sound at startup, so I had to unplug the machine, and wait an hour, still didn't work, so I slid out the motherboard, and then put it back in, then it worked. I also lost half my files, even when I didn't select the "clean installation" button. But when I switched it back to 8.5, it was normal again. Sorry, but I can't exactly remember my memory on it, since I'm using my Powerbook G4 17", which has internet, but I always look at my memory on my Performa HD, I think I have at least 42.9 right now on my HD, with Virtual Memory off.

Sorry this is probably the longest message in history, but I'm sorry I didn't mention this stuff earlier.
