Performa 550

Help me Connect a Mac with a PC Please.

The characters:
A Performa 550 running System 7.5.5
A modern PC with Debian and WinXP
A cable totally intended for some other purpose.
A part time noob.

Act I, Scene 1:
Once upon a time a noob came into possession of two brand new Interpretype machines (used for 'talking' with the hard-of-hearing type people). Said machines can communicate with a PC using a special cable that connects to said PC's serial port. Much to the noob's surprise (and delight) one end of the cable could fit in the Mac's serial port tethering the two computers together for the first time. The noob had a brainstorm. "What if the computers spoke with one another, perhaps sharing files," the noob thought aloud. So the noob got to work. First the noob tried to get BasiliskII to communicate with the Mac ("They know the same language - Apple Talk - so it should work"). But alas, it did not work. Undaunted by this failure, the noob browsed the interwebs searching hither and tither for knowledge. Much was learned including great secrets on arcane rituals and powerful artifacts known to men as 'null modems'. But the noob was and is a noob and a noob knows not of the skills to determine if the cable could be made to function as a null modem. (Also, the cable is still under warranty so it's not the best idea to take it apart.)

If anyone has any idea on how to continue this quest, I'd be most obliged.
