The manxathletics.com forum

Welcome to the manxathletics.com forum.  Please share information and your views on the sport in the Isle of Man with others.

The forum has been operating in its present form since April 2004 and I particularly welcome comments from new contributors, whether you live on or off the Isle of Man, if you have an interest in Manx athletics.

Many people have used the forum to give thanks to the officials or their own supporters when they have enjoyed an event. Contrustive criticism is always welcome as an additional means of communication, although it is not intended to replace formal communication between clubs and other bodies and their members.

If you are unable to find information about an event on any of the Manx websites, then the forum is the best place to ask for help from other people. Whilst you can email me at murray@manxathletics.com  and I will do my best to point you in the right direction, the people who have the answer to your question are likely to visit the forum so it is better that you ask it here. manxathletics.com is an independent site and I do not hold office within any of the five Manx clubs.

There are a few rules. Firstly, you should always use your real name as, apart from making people accountable for what they say, one of the objectives of the website is to make the sport friendly and appealing so please do not hide behind a nickname (anonymous entries will be deleted). Secondly, (it should go without saying) you must not insult or offend anyone. Thirdly, pesistent abuse of rules 1 and 2 will result in the forum being withdrawn.

Thanks for being sensible and I hope you continue to enjoy the forum and the sport.

Murray Lambden

Message:   Well done to all local athletes this weekend - some great performances especially from Marie and Michael. Gold and silver in a National championship speaks for itself!

We got back to a warm and sunny Isle of Man this afternoon from a cold and wet Blackpool where Gail Griffiths and Sarah Nelson were running the Half Marathon on a course using the full length of the Promenade. The race started in fine drizzle, but this became rather heavier as the race went on, and the cloud was so low that most of Blackpool Tower was invisible! The weather actually provided almost ideal racing conditions for a distance event as it was cool and almost completely still.

Unofficially by my watch Gail recorded 92.10 and Sarah 95.14. If confirmed, these times give Gail a pb by exactly a minute, and Sarah by just over a minute.

Gail ran really consistently throughout. After running the first mile a fraction too fast she then settled into a good rhythm of almost exactly 7 minutes per mile, which was her target. She went through 3 miles in 21.02 and 8 miles in 55.50. She lost a few seconds per mile towards the end of the race but was happy to record a substantial pb. She was slightly disappointed not to dip under 92 but felt she couldn't have run any harder.

Sarah also did really well. She possibly started a little too fast, going through 3 miles just 10 seconds behind Gail in 21.12. By the 8 mile mark she was a minute behind in 56.50 but still looking very comfortable and strong. At around 9 miles she started to feel some tightness in her calves and struggled a bit in the final third of the race, but should still be very pleased to take over a minute of her previous pb. She is still learning the Half Marathon, this being only her third one, and she has improved substantially each time. Plenty more to come from Sarah at this distance I think.

I believe the provisional results will be posted on the event website on Tuesday. I think Gail may well be in or around the top 100 overall out of around 1300, with Sarah perhaps about 30 places further back. Well done both.
