The manxathletics.com forum

Welcome to the manxathletics.com forum.  Please share information and your views on the sport in the Isle of Man with others.

The forum has been operating in its present form since April 2004 and I particularly welcome comments from new contributors, whether you live on or off the Isle of Man, if you have an interest in Manx athletics.

Many people have used the forum to give thanks to the officials or their own supporters when they have enjoyed an event. Contrustive criticism is always welcome as an additional means of communication, although it is not intended to replace formal communication between clubs and other bodies and their members.

If you are unable to find information about an event on any of the Manx websites, then the forum is the best place to ask for help from other people. Whilst you can email me at murray@manxathletics.com  and I will do my best to point you in the right direction, the people who have the answer to your question are likely to visit the forum so it is better that you ask it here. manxathletics.com is an independent site and I do not hold office within any of the five Manx clubs.

There are a few rules. Firstly, you should always use your real name as, apart from making people accountable for what they say, one of the objectives of the website is to make the sport friendly and appealing so please do not hide behind a nickname (anonymous entries will be deleted). Secondly, (it should go without saying) you must not insult or offend anyone. Thirdly, pesistent abuse of rules 1 and 2 will result in the forum being withdrawn.

Thanks for being sensible and I hope you continue to enjoy the forum and the sport.

Murray Lambden

Message:   Brian and I both started competing regularly at road-running on the Island at about the same time in the mid-eighties. I hadn't known him until then, and he quickly became the first new friend I made in the sport.

We were quite evenly matched for a number of years and pushed each other hard in many events. Brian was firecely competitive, but a generous rival who only ever had praise for his fellow athletes.

I was a spectator when Brian recorded his first (and only?) sub-3 hour marathon, at the local event when it was held in the south of the Island. The course consisted of a run from Ronaldsway out to Hango Hill and back, and then four laps of what is now the Syd Quirk course. On this occasion the runners were turned too soon before Hango Hill, and an extra stretch on the road down to the Shoe Factory had to be hastily added just before the finish at the Ronaldsway Aircraft Co. Social Club. It fell to me to break this news to Brian when he thought he only had 400m to go, and I think it was possibly the only time I ever heard this gentleman really swear! Fortunately the extra distance proved to be only a minor inconvenience, and Brian achieved his ambition with a couple of minutes to spare.

After he took up race-walking, I was delighted that Brian joined the "Ballagyr Breakfast Club" for our weekend training spins, and enjoyed the conversations (sometimes rather one-sided!) that we could never have had while running. It is now painfully poignant that each time we met Brian would tell us exactly how many days he had to go until his retirement.

His shockingly early demise is a huge loss to Manx athletics, to his many friends, and especially, of course, to his family, of whom he was so proud.

Brian, it was a pleasure and a privilege to have known you.
