The good, the bad, and the ugly

I hope everyone had a great time this year at the camp. We are dedicated to make it a great experience for all involved. I would like to hear from all of you, what did you like about the camp, what didn't you care for, what can you do without, what would you like us to add next year, what should we do more of and concentrate on. The point is you all gave us great feedback so far, but we still want to improve on the camp next year, your feedback is essential to that process. Please understand we had experienced racers and people who have never used a compass before this camp. We aim to please all comers. Have a great day.

Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly

As a team that has only done a couple of races - the information we learned was extremely helpful - especially the navigation and the experience with the rappels. One thing I know our team would like more experience and instruction on is paddling - we would like to learn how to be more efficient as none of us paddled prior to any racing. The presentation regarding both the foot care and race strategies was also great and gave us a lot of ideas on organization. I think you all did an excellent job with the camp especially in providing useful information for inexperienced racers. Thanks!!

Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly

Hi Ron,

We want to start by saying the camp was fantastic! Over the top great. We had an outstanding time. We couldn't have hoped for more. Since you asked for ways to better the camp, we could see one slight one though, and so we'll throw it out there. This is slight, we're not upset. We had a great time. This is just out there for your consideration. Consider seperating the group even more for the race in the future. East-West probably wasn't enough. We're guessing your best times were from East racers? We know West racers quickly bottle necked on the first CP as 60 of us tried to climb down that first muddy, icey, rocky slope...and tried not to knock others to there demise. Then we almost ran as a group to the cave were we tried to squeeze 60 in at a time. It was time consuming and something we could have accomplished much quicker if we'd been spread out. We think the first CP took us almost 20 minutes to reach and punch but we found it in less then 20 seconds. Maybe next year have 4 maps?...or give everyone the same map but start them like a shotgun golf tournament (10 start on CP1, 10 start on CP2, 10 start on CP3, etc). Anyway, we wanted to throw that out there. Keep in mind we had a smile on our face the whole time. We can't thank you, your wife, Gerry, Jamie, and all the volunteers enough! It was fantastic.

Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly

I'll start off by saying thanks for giving us the opportunity to learn from you and your team. With no experience coming into the camp I know have the basic knowledge of some of the key aspects of adventure racing. My own team is setting goals and training for future race events. Thank YOU personally for giving me the confidence. As for the training a few things 1. maybe a few more stations- the waiting in line was time consuming. I understand there were only so many volunteers. 2. With the power point presentation maybe incorporate some more pictures. not just race pictures but rigging, towing, or even food and foot kits. 3. and most important I think more time available for the orienteering training. Thanks again to everyone for a great weekend. I hope to be racing next to (in front of) you someday!!! HAHA

Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly

I had a wonderful time at the camp. Great information, wonderful hands on rope work. It was a real pleasure to spend a weekend with so many enthusiastic people and to see the commitment of the training staff to make this a first class instructional camp.

I would offer that I think there should have been some instruction on the importance and technique of belaying during the rappeling. Novices to rapelling might not understand how important it is to the safety of rapeller.

I really hope all of those who put this on - get as much as they give because I thought this was a tremendous weekend.

Thank you.

Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly

This was an incredible experience. I had never rappelled before (except once to get out of gym class in high school), let alone ziplined or traversed. The volunteers at the rappels were patient and reassuring... thank you so much! The clinics were ridiculously informative and the volunteers and/or instructors incredibly knowledgable.

The only thing I can think of is to put something about food/electrolyte drink on the mandatory gear list. Some true newbies might not think of it... ;)

I like "Racer X"'s suggestion of a shotgun-style start to the practice race. Also, are the results from that race posted anywhere? Just wondering how my team did overall...

Gerry had mentioned that gear rental was free, but that we could "donate" if we would like. I would still like to donate if possible. Where can I send some cash?

...and again, thanks so much for a great weekend!
