Race Update #1 - June 25, 2007
WOW! What an incredible course we have designed for the 2007 Thunder Rolls Adventure Race. My impression of the course is that it’s going to be a true WILDERNESS expedition race requiring good navigation skills. In the trekking section(s) there are NO roads! A lot of bushwhacking and true wilderness navigation. This is an all new course, with the majority in never before accessed land. Please make note of the following updates: • The schedule of events has been changed. The 18 hour race will start at midnight on Friday night. The 9 hour race will start at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. Check-in for both races will be from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Active Endeavors in Davenport, Iowa. The race briefing will be at 9:30 p.m. at the Grange Hall in Illinois City for both races. • A support person(s) is not required or needed. You will be on your own during the duration of the race. Plan accordingly! If you have fans and supporters, they can only cheer for you at a distance. No outside assistance is allowed in transition areas or on the course. • 1:24,000 National Geographic Maps created by TOPO! Will be used for this race. You will be required to plot UTM’s. UTM Guides will be given to each team at check in. The only outside map which may be used is the Illinois Atlas and Gazetteer available at Active Endeavors. • The start location of the race is “to be announced”,(TBA). I will divulge the course at the race briefing. I believe it adds to the race when the course is not known beforehand. It removes any advantage local teams may have. As this is a USARA National Qualifier for the National Championships, all teams must have an equal chance. The course is laid out very logically, and is VERY CHALLENGING! • Camping is available at Loud Thunder Forest Preserve, 19408 Loud Thunder Road, located approximately five miles east of Illinois City. Primitive sites cost $11.00 per night and electric sites are $14.00 per night. There will also be primitive camping at race headquarters located at the Grange Hall in Illinois City. Shower facilities are available at Loud Thunder Forest Preserve. • Please get registrations in ASAP! Since The North Face is once again sponsoring the race by providing $50.00 TKA Micro ¼ Zip Long Sleeve Fleece shirts, sized specifically for men or women, I would like to properly size all racers. Have a wonderful, safe, healthy and adventurous July 4th. |

Re: Race Update #1 - June 25, 2007
Re the cheering section, how far is "from a distance" - we are coming from Des Moines and trying to figure out if we need motel rooms for one night or two. Are we going to be essentially out of touch/view from the cheering section for the entire race? Thanks. |

Re: Race Update #1 - June 25, 2007
My comments were actually a little tongue in cheek. Of course, your fans can see you at the transition areas. All are easily accessible by car. They can also be at the start/finish. I made those comments since this race will definitely be different than past races. You will essentially be self supported for the duration of the race. I have also changed the start time of the 18 hour race to remove the need for a room on Friday night and to allow teams to get an early departure on Sunday morning. Friday night we have free tent camping available right next to the Grange Hall in Illinois City. This will be very convenient for all. Gerry |
