Relaxation
I know most of us reading this do martial arts. I'm sure that some of us find the art relaxing. But here the question: How do you relax? What do you do to relax? What activities (or non-activities) do you find relax you the most? Is there a certain atmosphere or setting? Are they certain people that help you relax? I'll leave this pretty open ended. Feel free to share your thoughts. |

i relax by burning myself up on the mat and then taking a couple hours vacation on my couch. I have found though, that any lingering aches or pains dissapear as soon as i have finished tying my obi. when i walk into the changing room i may be a mere man, but when i walk out im far more. others have commented on the same effect. nothing is quite as relaxing as being truly tired. Wanna chill? blast out ten katas twice apiece from low rank on up, first slow then full speed. have some food and a movie prepared because you wnat feel like doing much of anything afterwards. |

I relax by sparring, believe it or not. to me, there is nothing more relaxing than after spending a long day at work, going to sparring and completely just letting go and working out. Then chilling on the couch afterward w/ a movie. Its awesome!! |

Wow... you guys have no idea how closely you are to Fight Club: "Being tired isn't exactly being rich, but sometimes it feels the same." |

Yeah, ninja, we are what we are. :) I, too, find that it can be relaxing to just lose myself in physical action on the mat. Self-defense, for me, although I can empathize with David's use of kata for pretty much the same effect (I used to do that in Korea when I just needed to switch my mind off and burn calories). Outside of that, though, I also enjoy reading. The best is to get a good book that you've read a hundred times before (I'm in favor of any of the Vor series by Lois McMaster Bujold, but whatever works for you) and just vegetate on the couch with some music playing and a cup of joe- yes, I drink coffee when I'm relaxing. |
