What is something you would like to improve and why?
Tell us something that you're working hard on. Maybe it's a kata, maybe it's a personal quality, maybe it's an individual skill which you would like to be better at. I've been trying to improve my flexibility- I doubt I'll ever be able to do a full splits, but I wouldn't cry if I could consistently kick at my own head height without overbalancing (about 6'0"). It's really just a pride thing for me, I think- my aptitudes are in other areas- but I would like to be able to do the nifty kicks and stuff that greater flexibilty allows for. |

I just REALLY wanna be able to do a backflip. I'm not so concerned with kicking high, I'm not too keen on kicking higher than waist level... I can, but I feel like my groin isn't adequately protected. Seeing Shihandai Crawford "ring that bell" on others when they shot for head-level kicks and kinda changed my mind to the whole Thunderfoot strategy. |

It would be great to do back flips and hand springs, but since this isn't gymnastics, I think sparring and self defense would be great to improve on, I mean there's always room to improve on everything technically, but those are my biggest needs. I mean I really suck at self defense. |

Self defense? Well... go with what Bruce Lee advises in his Tao of Jeet Kune Do. Consider your natural response, the VERY thing you would do as instinct. For instance, if your first reaction to someone swinging at your face is to raise your hand and flinch, you should teach yourself to raise that hand in defense and then contemplate what openings it makes for you to retaliate. I don't know if that helps. |

Looking back over this, I have to say that I haven't lost the desire to have greater flexibility. I realize that kicking someone in the head is, generally, pretty silly (while Shihan-Dai Crawford has never done the John Brown routine on me, I've seen it often enough to know the drill...), it's still great flash! Add to that, though, I really want to improve my kata. I've been studying AKK now for, what, close to a decade? My katas are adequate, but they really don't go much beyond that. A big part of that is having a thorough understanding of what I'm doing during each movement (or stillness)-understanding what I'm defending against, how this response is valid in this situation, and what variations I could be looking at. |

something i have found, being mainly a kicker because of my build and length, is that the higher you can kick, the more power and speed you have even at waist high kicks. if you can kick to your own head height, then your entire range of kicking is improved up to that point. also, i do not count where my kick stops as where i should kick. my opinion is where ever you can hold your leg in proper form, for several seconds is the limit of your true powers range, just because you can fling your leg up to head height doesn't mean it does damage, try breaking a board at that height. last thing i promise, remember that we are not always on our feet, should you get knocked over, and your ground fighting skills are not up to par or your build does not suffice, it may be your flexibility that saves you, kicking high while on the ground, with power means you are not out of options after being sweeped. remember to fight and train with your own size and strenght in mind |
