Who are you?

Tell us who you are...

I'm Avery, I hold black belts in Awase Kenpo Karate-Do and Hapkido (UlJi Kwan, Korean Hapkido Federation). When I am in the US, I am a part-time instructor under Soke Schenk as well as a licensed English teacher. As of right now, I'm finishing up 16 months in Korea and should be back in Ohio around the middle of August.

Hmmmm, not a very active forum I see...Anyways, I'm Will White and I go to the Institute of Karate in Wooster. I'm only a yellow belt so far but I hope to make it up to Black Belt some day.

Re: Who are you?

I'm David Click. I took class under Shihandai Crawford until I got my yellow belt, and then spent most of my time under Sensei Siobheuang practicing katas and weapons... doing the tournament scene for a little bit. Now I'm doing Soke's college class for credits... but also to start over and get a more solid base. And now I feel MUCH better about my form. I do a lot of independent study, reading books and practicing with the weapons I collect. Well... hope to see you guys sometime.

Re: Who are you?

I'm Chrys Collins. I'm sort of the class clown here in Wooster. I have my first instructors rank, and I'm almost to my 2nd. I'm a purple belt now, that has a lot of self-defenses and reversals to catch up on. I've been training for 3 yrs. in May. I also love doing the fans.

Re: Who are you?

Well, Cara, that's everyone's dream in the martial arts, I think... but belts aren't everything, you know? And... Chrys? Were you at Wayne last Fall? I remember a purple belt helping out at my college class. If you see Soke (cuz I don't think he keeps up with his forums...), let him know I mean to keep up with the martial arts, but I can't make it out to Wooster. Let him know that when Shihandai Crawford starts teaching again, then he'll likely see me more often. I just picked up a pair of fans, and my girlfriend is wanting to learn some stuff with them... think you could give some pointers?

Re: Who are you?

ninja, i realize that the belts aren't everything. I was more referring to the vast experience that comes with it. the knowledge, the wisdom, the years of training, it's all represented by the belt. i should have worded it differently before.

Re: Who are you?

Nah, I'm not trying to correct anybody. I think it's awesome that you have an aspiration like that. I can't seem to settle down with a martial art.

Re: Who are you?

Hi Click, yes that was me. Tammi is the fan sensei. Alot of the fans is about hip s and snapping. The first kata is like seishenho sho dan, but fans. So it's pretty easy to learn it just takes time. Just remember, the real knowledge and training starts AFTER you get your black belt! Click where are you at?

Re: Who are you?

everyone should know me,if not shame on you (or shame on me?).anyway Meghan and I now have internet at home. I have a home page on tribe.I haven't visited the dojo in some time (my-bad). I still train regularly at home and I have one student. I am working hard on developing a curriculum for shiro-tsuru kenpo (white-crane kenpo),a sub-style under the Awase-Kenpo system, as per the requirement's I must fulfill for eligibility for roku-dan (6th degree). Oh, and YES Shodan black-belt really is just the beginning! Happy journey on your path toward that goal.

Re: Who are you?

"Under every black belt is a white belt, and under every white belt is a black belt." - Shihandai Crawford.

"Belts are only good for two things: How high you should be able to kick and to hold your pants up." - Shihandai Crawford

Since the belt thing came up, those two favored quotes seemed kinda relevant... I guess. Either way, I thought I'd pass the gift of that wisdom along, because it taught me not to confuse rank with skill, and that a black belt is indeed not a symbol of mastery, but a symbol of having learned the basics, and can now truly learn the art.

As for arts, I 've always been the self-trained sort. The way Miyamoto Musashi spoke of those people who "have to find their own path." I guess that's what I'm doing. I got lax, I won't lie. But, one day out of nowhere I decided to go to the tournament in Columbus... it was very disappointing, but I learned what I needed to do.

1. If you do a weapons kata, PICK A SONG! Else, they'll play someone else's song on the next arena (which was a crappy song that I never wanted my own bo-staff form to ever be paired with!
2. Remember they take pictures! Else, you'll be completely caught off guard by that photographer who flashes you three rapid blinders that disorient you as you twist into your next move.
3. LIE ON YOUR APPLICATION! When they ask for your training, be honest and tell them where you think you measure up. Because if you wear that yellow belt cuz that's the highest you ranked in organized martial arts, you'll wind up competing with one or two beginners, and your 1st place medal won't mean squat, cuz you knew it was unfair to them to compete with someone more advanced and unfair to you to not have a challenge and know how well you did against your peers.
4. Bring your own foam weapons! I had to borrow a sword, cuz I thought I'd be able to buy one from a vendor, but I couldn't... I lied on that one and told them I was a blackbelt in sword, so I lucked out and they let me compete with the blackbelts. I'd like to say I did ok, but that guy Ken was amazing!

I recognized a Kung Fu master Kong had introduced his classes to, and went to say "hello." He gave me some advice on my sword-tactics and then told me I only dropped my staff during my weapons form because I "was trying to do kungfu moves without anyone to show you some real kung fu!" So I basically asked him to show me, and received his business card.

By the way guys, the business card thing is a RITUAL in the east. If a master hands you a business card with two hands, accept it with two hands, look at it, read it, understand it, and then DONT put it in your back pocket, put it somewhere that shows you value them as a contact. Traditional masters get really irate when they see a master putting on his gear and passing his business card from his teeth.

Well, to bring this long expostulation to a close, I lost the business card, and had to bother everyone on God's green earth to get his number, and then finally contacted him and made my appointment to show up. My girlfriend encouraged me through and through for ALL of this to happen, and even drove me to the class, which is where she ventured to learn fan, and is now. And it works... she kicked my ass with a fork adapting her fan technique. She somehow swept the broomhandle away and deftly avoided my kick and planted those prongs right into my buttcheek, so I know all those beautiful movements she does are more than just show. So I guess you could say I'm back in the game!
