Why do you study martial arts?

Just the usual stuff- tell us why you started practicing martial arts and why you continue to do so.

Personally, I started way back in high school, studying Aikido because I wanted to be more graceful. That was a fairly short lived effort- I broke my foot after about a year of practice- but I was hooked. Since then most of my study has been in the nature of learning how things work and why, and also in seeing how different styles share some elements and are different in other ways. What about you?

Well, I think it's a good thing to get involved in for things like improving balance, learning to defend yourself, and just to challenge yourself to do new things.

Re: Why do you study martial arts?

When I was younger, I always believed the man that knew martial arts always beat up all the bad guys, no matter how big they were. Ironically, that hasn't changed, the more I read and learn, the more I see the potential of a dedicated practioner overcoming any and all obstacles. I wasn't allowed to take classes for a long time because my parents were under the impression I'd be taught a lot of religious mumbo jumbo. I started some independent study when I was 14, and it saved my life. I was pretty depressed and on a nasty downward spiral... but finding that book on Kempo really set me straight. Gave me something to shoot for... and eventually I talked my parents into classes, and after my brother went to Soke's college program, my mom sent me along and I was hooked. School and work kind of dwindled my participation for awhile... but I've recently been re-inspired to really take it seriously. What Soke's doing, well... from what I've observed, he's living my dream. I want to master the martial arts, and teach it to others... to be a sort of Mr. Miyagi.

Re: Why do you study martial arts?

I really want that feeling that I accomplished something. I've never finished anything, except high school. We always moved around and I was always being pulled out of everything I enjoyed. I also want something to work for, something that actually means something to me. I enjoy it, even though it doesn't always come easy. Not only that-- the comradere is the best. Everyone is the coolest.

Re: Why do you study martial arts?

I've always wanted to practice martial arts since i was a kid. It started as it always does, watching jackie chan and chuck norris movies, and wanting to do what they do Then i found out that my dad studied w/ soke like, 23 years ago, and i thought it would be cool to do the same. I'm looking at a career in law enforcement and i know that doing karate now will help me in the future. plus, the people i train w/ are awesome!!!!

Re: Why do you study martial arts?

Just revisiting this thread...

Everything I said in my original post is still true, but I wanted to add a couple things. Obviously, as has been stated, karate is a great way to meet some truly unique and fun people. Then again, karate allows me to constantly set new goals for myself, even in techniques and skills that I've already passed (note: I do not use the word 'mastered' ) Finally, it gives me the opportunity to teach- to pass along skills and knowledge that I've acquired and that I love to other people who are at different points along similar paths- and to learn from those same people. Often I end up learning things that I had no idea I didn't know!
