Dear members,
It has just been brought to our attention that Medicaid is denying equipment to many students. The reason given for the denial is as follows:
"Medicaid wheelchair requirements for necessity - The documentation must be within 180 days and the patient needs an evaluation from a major medical center where there is a complete compliment of Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy and a pediatric sub-specialty. These are the appropriate medical centers:
1. Children's Hospital of Michigan (Detroit)
2. University of Michigan (Ann Arbor)
3. MOtt's Children Hospital (Ann Arbor)
4. Mary Free Bed (Grand Rapids)
5. DeVos (Grand Rapids)
Medicaid will not accept letters or therapy evaluations from school therapists. If therapists or parents are concerned, have them contact Medicaid at 800-622-0276 for all complaint"
I hope this upsets all of you as much as it has us here at the Beekman Center in Lansing. WE are contacting Medicaid and hope that you will too. We need to advocate for our students and families, since for most of them it would be a hardship or impossible for them to get to one of the 5 "approved centers". On top of that we all got the same degrees, but just happen to work in a school, the therapists in the centers are not more qualified than the therapist that works with the student on a daily basis. Lets get our voice heard and change this policy.
