In the death of Mrs. Thomas B. Smith which occurred at her home in Windom township, eight miles east of Austin Monday at 11:30 a.m. one of the best known old settlers and most respected woman of our community passes away.

Coming to Mower county in 1856 with her husband, she knew the trials of pioneer life, its privations, its joys, its pleasures and none could recall them more vividly than she. The beautiful farm and pretty home of Mr. and Mrs. Smith on Rose Creek, in Windom, was the reward for the early days of hardship.

Margaret R. Gorman was born in New Jersey, seventy-six years ago. For many years past she has been an invalid, but not willing to lay down the work and the burden she had carried through so many years. She came to Wisconsin when a girl residing at Racine, Wisconsin where in July 1855 she was married to Thomas B. Smith. Their removal to Mower County followed shortly where they have since resided on the farm near Rose Creek.

Beside the husband, two sons survive Mrs. Smith, Frank living in Minneapolis and George residing near Rose Creek.

Mrs. Smith was a livable, interesting little woman, hospitable and kind hearted. She was domestic in a marked degree giving the best part of her life to her home and family. Those who knew her best appreciated her gentleness and kindness most. She leaves a good record of a long life, well spent.

The funeral will be held Thursday morning at 9:30 from St. Peter's church in Rose Creek and the remains laid to rest in Rose Creek cemetery.

Thomas Smith
Thomas Smith, one of the early settlers of Mower county, died at Minneapolis and his body will be taken to Rose Creek Feb. 13 for burial from St. Peter's church.

Mr. Smith was born at St. Helens, Lancashire, England, in October, 1832, and came to America with his parents in 1842. They settled in Wisconsin. After his father's death in 1849 he managed the farm and July 8, 1855, married Margaret Gorman. They sold their farm at Racine, Wis., and after a journey of 19 days, using horses as far as Winona and oxen from there, they reached Mower county. He lived on Section ten in Windom for about ten years and after the death of his mother he moved onto her farm in the southeast quarter of Section 13. They had two children, George E. and Frances J.. The former resides on the old farm. Mr. Smith always took a great interest in public affairs and held offices of trust in the township. Mr. Smith was a very observing man and it was his discovery of a bed of peat that lead to an explanation by the state of the peat drift in this part of the state.

The funeral services will be held Tuesday at noon from St. Peter's church, Rose Creek.
