Ideal Fin for Formula f2 model ' 06
Ι'am doing FW competition in greece and I got a F2 '06 board wich I used with a DB fin R13 soft+ rake 8 but my speed is very slow compare to my old SB 158, my sail is the MS TR-2 11m my weigt 83kg and 180cm tall. Can any of you racers give me some advices about the ideal fin for that board for 8-15 knots and up to 30knots ? thanks GRE -969

Well of course the answer for any board is the Kashy 70. They are nearly impossible to get, but if you find one it is awesome. The Select wide really works pretty well in that board, but is faster upwind than downwind. I used one in that board with an 11 meter in 20 30 knots at the Alex Caviglia race last January and it was a nice set up and I am about your weight. Try an r 18 which seems pretty nice. And do not be afraid to even try a Techtonics in there which being g10 is really soft, and in stronger winds works well in the new board for me. There are a couple of other fins out there that we are getting ready to test and I am sure you will see results on the page for them after we see how they work. |

Τhanks for your replies, but I think in stronger winds the Fin should not be too soft. The f2 '06 Formula is a very strong but also a very heavy board and it is very difficult to believe that this constraction can be realy competitive against SB. Thanks again gre - 969

I believe a lot of it has to do with the sea conditions as well. The older F2 rips in rough conditions, better than the new one it seems. At least if you have very short steep chop. In seas that are more spaved out, open rolling swells it isn't such a factor though. And in small chop, and smooth conditions the newer board is incredible. The Starboards seem to have a flatter rocker forward, as do the Mike's Labs, which do seem to do better in the really rough stuff like San Francisco. I would say that when the wind is over 20, a somewhat stiffer fin is generally better, but it depends on how you sail the board. If you are more old school, then stiffer is better. If you sail it the way we do here in Miami and let the board fly a lot, then softer is better......Just try a couple of fins and compare, thats how we do it. |
