while it true that around a course that a kite has no chance against the best windsurfers, speed seems to be another matter entirely. keep your eyes on the speeds this year. I'm sure 6-10 kites will go over 50. I think that with imporved board design that the course racing will become a bit closer as well. Only time will tell.

I'd still like to get some slalom action going between the kites and windsurfers. speed on a reach is getting very close as long as it is broad. some of the new kiteboard design is getting a boost by looking at windsurfing technology.

See you on the water.

Re: Kite vs. Windsurf

Here in San Francisco- the formula sailors are still the fastest in the long distance racing. Last w-ends Ronstan Challenge was approx 33 miles upwind and downwind racing with Seth Besse setting a new course record of 54 minutes while the fastest kite was 1 hour and 20 min.
What really slowed the kites down was the flood tide coming back upwind. Winds were 15-20k- most formula guys on 10m rigs and 66-70cm fins.
Kiters had lots of different set ups from foiling board to surfboards to bi-directional boards. Video here- http://stevebodner.blogspot.com/2007/06/ronstan-challenge-day-1.html
