I am informed that there were loads of swimmers on the beach this morning. They were all waiting to swim the Channel. I think Steve said that he would be first in because he was doing the A2A. As a kid ( I know he is a big kid now) during swimming lessons they had to swim in lanes to improve their style. He was always having the whistle blown at him for overtaking in the lanes. He always had to be in front. I just hope that he does not notice if any one goes past him because he still as a long way to go after his feet get on that beach . Truck on Steve |

He should have settled into his swim and worked out the rythmn with the waves. Two hours in in, you can still see the cliffs of Dover which can be a bit intimidating as you don't feel like you are going anywhere. The key is to not look back. The boat will be a bit different to what he is used to as Tom's boat down in Weymouth is smaller and a lot more personal. To me the channel boat seemed massive and I felt a lot more alienated from the support crew than when I swam in Weymouth...I also definitely missed swimming with Steve as you do feel very much alone. But you are loving it though and every few minutes you get this amazing adrenaline rush as you realise this is no training swim, this is it! One of my main worries during the swim is that everyone looked so unhappy -- I convinced myself that they were unhappy because the conditions were so bad and that the swim would be aborted! Only after the swim when I mentioned it did they tell me that they looked so miserbale because they were feeling sea sick. |

NEWSFLASH!! We have liaised with Norris Mcwhirter (Guinness World Records) and Steve is set to be a record holder after all. The ugliest to ever complete the A2A is still available. Apparently we need independent confirmation from previous athletes, so maybe Eddie and Julian could coroborate? Happy Gurning Steve.

Just got back home after a week in Dover waiting for Steve, Lucy and support group. I have to say the weather was absolutely dreadful. WIND,THUNDER STORMS and RAIN - hope the capital letters lent enough emphasis to the report. When Steve started the swim this morning the pilot went right to the far end of the beachand none of us managed to reach Steve to wish him good luck. Lucy said we all looked very funny though - thanks dear!! By the way - I couldn't believe how good Steve looked at the end of the run - much better than the support group! |

As you know Glenys it's much much harder to support than take part you're constantly worried about where the competitor is, have they eaten enough blah blah blah. Then when it's over no-one remembers the support crew and their sacrifices only the competitor knows that.. regards Nigel |

Come on Steve, nearly there....I feel I have some understanding of how hard that swim must have been. Speaking to you this morning you sounded in good spirits but very aware of what you had been through. Seeing you run 84miles was a privaledge.....that might sound odd, but it was a good experience for all of us to support someone who was so determined and full of will power. I had imagined that was the hardest leg completed. How wrong was I!!!! You really do stand apart from anything considered average. Kay described the last 3 hours of the swim to us....possibly it is easier to understand what you achieved when we all learn that 8 people did not complete the channel yesterday! The shop has been buzzing this morning with interest in how you are doing. The support you have is immense....I wrecken even you might crack that tough exterior and shed a tear when you arrive in Paris....I know those around you will be. You'll all keep things together, but the whole group must be exhausted. Deep breaths and counts of 10 all round! |
